No Saviors Among U.S. Presidential Candidates
The never-ending cycle
Along with this quadrennial phenomenon, another cycle continues. It goes like this: Candidates vying for political office "promise the moon" with pre-election promises, most of which will never see the light of day.
But gullible supporters of presidential candidates get caught up in the hype and look upon their candidate as a potential savior, supporting and campaigning for them with vigorous passion bordering on worship prior to the elections.
If their candidate wins, there is a short honeymoon period until reality sinks in and presidential approval ratings drop as many of his lofty campaign promises fail to materialize. Yesterday's hero becomes today's goat, or should we say "scapegoat," since the president is blamed for all of the nation's ills that he was elected to solve, based on his platform promises.
So long before another election year rolls around, the public mood—even among former supporters—clamors for a change in administration to elect a new savior.
One would think that the public would someday catch on to this cycle, but alas, such is not the case, especially in presidential elections. I am reminded of the lyrics of an old folk song, "When will they ever learn?"
No human being is able to solve mankind's problems
In case you haven't grasped the point of this article, let me state it plainly: There are no saviors among our presidential candidates! In fact it has been said that "anyone intelligent enough to be president is intelligent enough not to take the job," realizing the impossibility of the problems facing the president.
History has provided a few unusually successful or popular presidents, resulting in exceptions to the electoral cycle that I have described, but usually, it's "same old, same old," or as Yogi Berra would say, "Déjà vu all over again." Of course even our most successful presidents left office with major problems still unsolved, mainly because many of the problems facing mankind are unsolvable by human means. The same can be said for the problems of all nations.
God's solution embodied in the gospel of the Kingdom of God
Several years ago a major U.S. news magazine called for the need of "a strong hand from somewhere." Little did that writer know, that is exactly what God promises: "Behold, the Lord God shall come with a stronghand, and His arm shall rule for Him; Behold, His reward iswith Him, and His work before Him" (Isaiah 40:10).
In Revelation 19:11-16 John was inspired to prophesy the return to earth of the only true Savior of mankind, Jesus Christ, truly with "a strong hand." "I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse. And He who sat on him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and makes war. His eyes were like a flame of fire, and on His head were many crowns. He was clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God. And the armies in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, followed Him on white horses. Now out of His mouth goes a sharp sword, that with it He should strike the nations. And He Himself will rule them with a rod of iron. He Himself treads the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. And He has on His robe and on His thigh a name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS."
Revelation 11:15 announces the results of this dramatic event: "Then the seventh angel sounded: And there were loud voices in heaven, saying, ‘The kingdoms of this world have become the kingdomsof our Lord and of His Christ, and He shall reign forever and ever!'"
Unlike human governments, Jesus Christ will not have to be voted into office, nor does the outcome of these prophecies depend on campaigning or any human effort. Isaiah 9:7 assures that, "Of the increase of His government and peace there will beno end, upon the throne of David and over His kingdom, to order it and establish it with judgment and justice from that time forward, even forever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this."
