Freedom of the press is a pillar of our society, and we expect the media to report facts and truth.

American politician Adlai Stevenson noted that the truth rarely finds its way into the papers—instead, editors opt to print what sells. He said: “An editor is someone who separates the wheat from the chaff and then prints the chaff.” (No doubt he’d had some less-than-satisfactory experiences with editors.)

Chaff is only fit to be burned (Luke 3:17), but wheat is to be treasured and preserved. Truth is precious, and only by knowing the facts can we be assured of success.

The “freedom of the press” that we cherish carries with it the responsibility to print the truth and to discard the chaff. This responsibility lies primarily on the shoulders of those doing the sifting.
