United Youth Camps
Jamaica
Ocho Rios, Jamaica - We had 18 campers gathered from various cities in Jamaica during the weekend of July 4, 2011, for a “mini-camp” located on the beautiful beach of Ocho Rios, Jamaica, to get in the zone and out of the world.
The camp was directed by Chuck and Mary Smith, assisted by Clark and Holly Earls, all of the Murfreesboro, Tennessee, congregation. Several Jamaican members also provided invaluable help with the camp.
The Murfreesboro and Nashville congregations helped with the funding of the camp by a yard sale, which raised over $1,700. Clothing items for the brethren and children were also sent from the two congregations. Camp t-shirts were donated by UCG teen and pre-teen campers from all around the southeast.
Camp began with a soup, chicken and rice dinner for brethren and campers at sunset after Sabbath services. The opening address was given by Chuck Smith. Children and staff were reminded of what the zone is all about. After dinner, campers moved into the living room where they enjoyed popcorn, soft drinks and a movie until the late night.
Camp activities included a beach day, pool fun and trust-building exercises. Games helped teach campers to rely on each other, which symbolized how we need to rely solely on God.
On the final afternoon of camp, each camper was given a challenge to recite the Ten Commandments before the staff judges. Each camper approached the seat and received $1 for each Commandment they stated. Campers were overjoyed by the surprise and the judges were impressed by the knowledge of the campers.
Even though camp lasted a short time, campers left with a better sense of what God’s Kingdom will be like. Judging by the smiles and laughter of the children throughout the camp, and the tearful goodbyes at the end, everyone had a wonderful time. The campers have already expressed their eagerness for a longer camp next year.
