Letter From Dan Preston
August 2, 2024
Good evening brethren and Happy Sabbath! Just a friendly reminder we have a potluck in all three congregations tomorrow.
Wise words from a Beatle
One of my favorite songs is George Harrison's "Any Road Will Take You There." In it, he sings, "If you don't know where you're going, any road will take you there." It's sort of a reflective look at the chaotic and surreal life as a member of the Beatles. You can listen to it here.
Of course, it's very true. If we don't know where we want to go, it doesn't really matter which road we take. Listening to the song, I have to stop and think about my own life. How did I get to where I am? Where am I going now? How will I get there?
Big Picture vs. Day-to-Day
Obviously, from a big picture perspective, we know where we are going - the Kingdom of God. That should be our guiding principle in all that we do. But what about the choices that more immediately affect us? How do we make those?
It's a question worthy of consideration. While God wants us to seek first the Kingdom, He doesn't tell us whether we should be a teacher, learn to fly a plane or buy a house. Those are all things we might choose to do in our lives that fit perfectly within the confines of God's laws. Any one of them - or all three - are fine choices. But they're our choices.
Where you headed?
So, where do you want to go? Some feel like they have no control over their lives and are afraid to make decisions. They worry they will do something that is contrary to the will of God, and as a consequence, never make choices and never give their life direction.
The reality is, God wants us to make choices. He wants us not just to choose to obey Him, but decide what we want to do with our lives. In tomorrow's sermon, we'll look at an example of one man who made some pretty bold - and difficult - choices. As a result, His life took some pretty wild turns at times, but God was able to use him in an amazing and powerful way. Your assignment for the remainder of the evening is to see if you can guess who it is.
Until tomorrow, enjoy the Sabbath evening and think about the direction you want your life to take!
