Are Political Systems an Orderly Way to Choose Leaders?

All the political name-calling and rhetoric can now be put to rest, or will it? Many rejoice their political candidate won, and many cry because their candidate lost. However, as soon as one election ends, the fight for the next begins. Even a winning candidate is thinking soon afterward how they can win the next election. So, the name-calling and political rhetoric never ends.

We have to ask ourselves, “Are our political systems really geared to be a peaceful and orderly way to select leaders or are they chaotic failed systems?”

Don’t misunderstand

Though these things are true about the democracies of this world, the alternatives of authoritarian-type governments are by far much worse. Afterall, God has permitted man to rule himself because of need and expediency. Though there are always exceptions, generally, rulers—even dictators—do not punish those who do good works, but those who do evil. The apostle Paul wrote the church in Romans 13:1: “Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God.”

Sir Winston Churchill wrote: “No one pretends that democracy is perfect or all-wise. Indeed, it has been said that democracy is the worst form of government except all those other forms that have been tried from time to time."

The late former U.S. President John F. Kennedy said: "Freedom has many difficulties and democracy is not perfect, but we have never had to put up a wall to keep our people in."

No one wants to live in an oppressive authoritarian system where everything one does is dictated and “big brother” is always watching. Places like North Korea and China are cases in point. Estranged from most of the world, North Korea has been ruled by the Kim family for three generations. Its citizens must show complete devotion to its current leader, Kim Jong-un.

The North Korean state controls everything and actively spies on its citizens using a vast surveillance and informer network. A citizen can be sent to prison for viewing, reading or listening to content from international media outlets. North Korea has never been able to produce enough food for its 26 million people. When it shut its border in January 2020, authorities stopped importing grain from China, as well as the fertilizers and machinery needed to grow food. Consequently, hunger and starvation are common issues for many. We certainly would not want this type government.

The Chinese constitution describes its system of government as a people's democratic dictatorship. Ten years into President Xi Jinping’s rule, repression deepens across the country. The Chinese government continues its abusive policies against Uyghurs and other Turkic Muslims in Xinjiang, which amounts to crimes against humanity. Across China the government is further tightening social controls. There is no independent civil society; even small pockets of freedom are eliminated. We wouldn’t want that kind of governance.

What is wrong with these governments?

It is the same thing that is wrong with the United States and other democracies of the western world. Those who rule over the people of the earth are carnal-minded men who do not have a godly kind of character. Even those leaders who may have good values and aspirations do not have a right kind of mind. This same problem applies to most of the citizenry of the entire world. As a general rule, most people reject God’s laws: “Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be” (Romans 8:7).

As a consequence, “The way of peace they have not known, and there is no justice in their ways; they have made themselves crooked paths; whoever takes that way shall not know peace” (Isaiah 59:8).

The carnality in the leaders and the citizenry of nations does not allow for permanent peace and order in any system of government on earth, but it ultimately engenders hatred, backbiting and chaos. This is why there is fighting, violence and war in the world almost on a continual basis. This is the reason for name-calling in politics and reprisals by the other candidates.

A new way of government in the world is coming

If there was genuine love in the leaders of the governments of this world and its people, any form of government would work. If everyone did as the apostle Paul admonished in Phillippians 2:3-4, there would be peace: “Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.”

Most leaders unfortunately only look out for themselves; they do not care for the interests of others. It takes a certain kind of mind, and most do not have it. And yet occasionally, even in this carnal world, you might see a unique person in government and in society who demonstrates this very rare quality of character.

Jesus Christ is soon going to return as King of kings to rule over all the world with His form of government! There will be no election campaigns, no big political conventions, no politicking, and no promises which are intended to garner votes to gain power. He will have already trained and vetted those who He will install in leadership positions. They will have proven a selfless attitude of service, sacrifice and love for God and people.

Christ will really stop crime and all war for 1,000 years. He will cause mankind to prosper and teach the world to be healthy; the hospitals will be empty through divine healing and godly, healthy living. He’ll bring families together by teaching His love, and heal the lonely and broken-hearted. He will wipe away the tears of the last six millennia.

He will convert the whole world and remove carnal human nature from people. It will be replaced with God’s ways through the power of the Holy Spirit and proper instruction in His laws. God’s government will be restored on earth, and all humanity will be called upon to come to a repentance and overcome (Acts 3:19-21).

Though most people on earth don’t realize it now, everyone is swayed by the foul spirit of the invisible dictator, Satan—the former Lucifer, who originally sat on the throne of the whole earth. He broadcasts by his spirit, his moods and attitudes of selfishness, vanity, lust for power and greed, envy and jealousy, competition and strife, and rebellion (Ephesians 2:1-3)! At the return of Christ, Satan will be bound for 1,000 years and humans will not be affected by his spirit anymore (Revelation 20:1-2).

Satan has, as it were, placed a covering or veil over the eyes of humankind so they cannot see the truth of the gospel (2 Corinthians 4:3-4). Isaiah 25:7 prophesies the veil will be taken away and they will be given God’s Spirit and the truth will be clearly revealed to them: “And He will destroy on this mountain the surface of the covering cast over all people, and the veil that is spread over all nations.”

Satan and his demons will be deactivated from affecting humankind throughout the entire Millennium. What an incredible difference the government of God will make when our loving Elder Brother, Jesus Christ, rules along with those called into His Church now and those called through the ages who will assist Him!

He will be a benevolent, kind, loving ruler. Working and ruling under Him will be truly converted saints, then made spirit—filled with God’s love, an outflowing love for the benefit and good, happiness, welfare and eternal salvation of all. This is the kind of government we can all earnestly pray comes very soon (Matthew 6:10)!
