Sugar as Well as Salt
Jesus said His followers are to be the “salt of the earth” (Matthew 5:13). We sprinkle a little salt on our food to add something special. Salt is good and adds flavor (Mark 9:50). Salt is also a preservative and a cleanser. In the past, salt was a precious trade commodity, and cities like Salzburg were named after the salt mines.
“Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one” (Colossians 4:6).
The Bible also talks about sweeteners. A little sweetness goes a long way in our relationships with one another. A strong friendship provides sweetness (Proverbs 27:9). God’s Word is sweet and provides life (Psalm 119:103).
Sugar and spice and everything nice—that’s not a bad way to be remembered by others. We need to give others sugar as well as salt. Be a little salt and sugar to those you meet today!
