Orpha Wingfield Honored for 104th Birthday
Orpha Wingfield of Tularosa, New Mexico, turned 104 years old on Oct. 9. She was baptized in the early 1950s in the Rio Grande River near Las Cruces by Rod Meredith, who was on a baptizing tour with Herman Hoeh. She still lives in her own house (which was moved from Alamogordo in the 1970s). She is no longer able to attend services and rarely leaves her home. However, she continues to take care of her own daily needs, other than receiving meals from Meals on Wheels. Although she does not need glasses or a hearing aid, she is concerned that her memory lapses at times—but then she remembers later. Orpha is an avid reader and has hundreds of books in her home. She has written poetry and has entertained visitors with her reading of “Bumbling Bumble Bee,” which she wrote in her late teens. Her western landscape paintings of deserts, mountains and sunsets were painted by memory and are placed throughout her house. She is a very lively conversationalist on many subjects.
