2019 Camp Reports
Camp Woodland
While July and August are typically very hot and muggy in the deep South, weather during camp was in the 80’s most days with cloud cover and a breeze part of the time as well! The beautiful camp facility is set on the edge of a small lake and is well laid out with close proximity between most activities. Campers and staff bunked in air-conditioned train cars which were connected by a boardwalk to the main dining and meeting halls. Boys’ dorms were on one side and girls on the other.
Camp began on a Friday, making the Sabbath the first full day of camp. The day was filled with fellowship, meaningful discussions, Sabbath services and finally a dance after sunset.
The rest of the activities began on Sunday, including morning Christian Living classes, color code interpersonal skills-building workshops, dance, swimming, high ropes with a zip line over the lake, low ropes, archery, softball, basketball, volleyball, giant Slip-N-Slide, canoeing, kayaking, paddle boating, human foosball and a campfire in the woods each evening. C
ampfire was a perfect end to each day with senior talks, skits and dorm sound offs. Afterwards, the entire camp gathered in the meeting hall to sing Ambassadors for Christ before turning in for the night.
There were two official camp dances with one more impromptu dance due to stormy weather. Wednesday evening was an open activity night where staff and campers enjoyed games, swimming, dancing and ice cream.
Thursday evening included an old-fashioned ice cream social with picnic blankets by the lake and then the final dance. Afterwards a wonderful camp slideshow was presented to highlight the special moments from the week. The last hymn was sung arm in arm, and tired campers headed back to their dorms to find late night pizza waiting for them.
The Woodland Camp staff were impressed with our campers and staff, saying that we were the “most organized group” they’ve ever had there. They’ve given us a contract for the same week next year which is a great blessing!
Overall it was a fabulous camp with lifelong bonds built between staff and campers alike. Hope to see you next year!
