On the Sabbath of Nov. 11, 2023, a retirement presentation and slideshow honored Scott Ashley, who retired from employment with the Church on Oct. 18.

Scott Ashley was first hired full-time by the Church of God in August of 1972 in the Worldwide News press office. He worked in various editorial capacities there until 1980.

After working in private industry for the next 15 years, he was contracted by the United Church of God in 1995 to work on the Good News magazine. He was then hired full-time in 1996 as managing editor of The Good News—which eventually became the Beyond Today magazine. He was managing editor for all of our booklets and other external publications.

Mr. Ashley, along with his wife, Connie, also served as church pastor for Denver, Colorado Springs and Frisco, Colorado, from January 2011 to May 2021.

He has completed more than 36 years of work for the Church of God and he will be greatly missed by the Media and Communications Services department and all who work for the Church.

Scott has a passion for the Bible and God’s people, so he will never really retire from serving the Church! But now it is time for Scott to retire from the deadlines. He needs time with his family—Connie and Jake (his faithful dog)—and time to enjoy his photography.

Peter Eddington

From Tom Robinson:

“I have had the pleasure and privilege of working under Scott Ashley for the past 22 years. He has been a very good friend and mentor for all that time, being deeply supportive and caring of me and others. I’ve immensely enjoyed our many talks and travels together.

“Scott’s service to the work of the Church has been immeasurable. I have always known him to be brilliant, with sage insights, being extremely knowledgeable about the Bible and a wide array of subjects, able to instantly grasp complex thoughts, yet remaining down to earth and welcoming of others’ perspectives.

“Scott has been deeply passionate about the truth, defending what’s right and calling out wrong and compromise at high levels. He’s one who takes a stand when it counts. My wife has likened him to John Wayne in old Western movies, a paragon of integrity, boldness and courage, and I certainly concur with that.

“His level of productivity for the Church has been greater than anything I’ve ever seen—a workhorse running at full speed for decades. He’s been able to churn out huge amounts of valuable material in short order, even while simultaneously wearing the many hats of managing editor, pastor, ABC and ministerial instructor, and member of the Council, serving on its various committees. I was regularly amazed that he always had plenty of time for me when I called even though I could not see how.

“Prior to Scott’s retirement, I was lamenting the loss of his direct oversight of our magazine and booklets. But I’m thankful that he is still involved in the review and editing of our material—he is still catching many needed changes to text and layout. And I’m happy that he will continue working on some other editorial projects he can devote more time to now that he is retired (or, perhaps better put, has a slightly reduced workload!).”

From Victor Kubik:

“I know that in your retirement you will continue to serve and give encouragement to all your peers. May God bless and keep you both! Your brother, friend and fellow Christian.”

From Darris McNeely:

“Congratulations on your retirement. May you have many ‘slot canyons,’ Rocky Mountain sunsets, and desert vistas in your future. Keep your camera ever ready...and don’t forget Connie.”
