This Is the Way, Walk in It

In a world with problems caused by humanity's rejection of God's way it can seem like one bad thing after another. Even as Christians, we tend to lose hope and the positive edge that God's Spirit can develop in us for service toward God, our families, our brethren and our communities.

How often have we read Isaiah 30:21 that says, "This is the way, walk you in it"? Have you ever noticed what proceeds it? Lets read Isaiah 30:20-21 in full. "And though the Lord gives you the bread of adversity and the water of affliction, yet your teachers will not be moved into a corner anymore, but your eyes shall see your teachers. Your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, 'This is the way, walk in it', whenever you turn to the right hand or whenever you turn to the left."

Is this only for the future or can we apply it today?

It is interesting to note how often Jesus alluded to examples of people who were "making a difference" and asked His disciples to learn or take note of their examples. One example is that of the Good Samaritan. Was the Samaritan remembered because he was a church member or for what he did? Jesus purposefully took an example far out of the common scope of accepted thinking of that time and simply said, "Learn!" It wasn't so much what the good Samaritan knew, like the priest or the Levite, but what he did. Jesus asks us to learn now to become teachers of a way of life. A way that is outgoing, away from self.

Today our world can look foreboding. The storm is coming and things will seem to be out of control. But God asks us to deal with our immediate sphere of influence and do what we can.

The "This is the Way, Walk You In It" articles focus on various teachers in todays world - be they people, communities or nations - that are making a difference, examples that run contrary to the general course of a world that has turned its back on God. It will then be our goal to make it personal, to encourage you to good works in your life. It is easy to point out the wrong or bad but there is also a time to point out the good.

The method of measurement is beyond anything caught in the world of time and space. It requires entering the stream of eternity that knows no spring and fills no ocean. Indeed, there is something beyond, and God asks us to take the time to think about it.

Almost 2,000 years ago, the apostle Paul shared a colorful prophecy with new Christians in the city of Thessalonica. What he shared is often mentioned at funerals and memorial services as words of hopeful encouragement. But these words are also bold declarations of prophetic understanding.

Four hundred years ago on a starry evening, an Italian man looked into the lens of his telescope and beheld the glories of the universe. One by one, over the course of time, he would document his discoveries and share them with his colleagues.

Forty-five years ago this past August, a relatively young man stood before an audience of a quarter of a million people gathered in the National Mall between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument. There he shared a dream with his fellow citizens. One man, with one dream, in one speech, spoke of one cherished treasure that had eluded his people—freedom.

God wants us to give our attention and allegiance to His heavenly Kingdom, rather than despairing over the world of man. God commands the "eyes of our heart" to focus on Him alone; to look up rather than around.

Today our world is besieged with a seemingly never-ending cycle of violence. Unfortunately, this cycle of "payback time" appears alive and well wherever humans draw breath and are willing to use their last ounce of energy to exercise their own perceived right to exact revenge.

Have you ever considered we are not alone in being restless before such encounters that demand specific timing? Perhaps you have never considered that God is also restless toward a needed future event.

God's plan for our lives doesn't follow the pattern of "five more minutes and we're there." We cannot necessarily expect to receive this type of response, either to the trials that we face now or to the challenges the saints will experience as the book of Revelation crescendos to its literal fulfillment.

During the American Civil War, Abraham Lincoln gave one the shortest yet most meaningful speeches in history. The two-minute address spoke to a crucial moment in the nation's history. Lincoln spoke in a redemptive tone about the judgment of God upon a single nation and what might yet be accomplished.

Have you ever prayed only to wonder if the words in your heart made it above the ceiling? Perhaps you've pondered if anybody up there is even listening. Oh yes, we've all at times wanted to shout, "Hello! Anybody home?"

The cool days of November are upon us. Since I was a lad, this time of the year always causes me to think of the echoing pronouncement, "It was on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month that the guns went silent."

Down through the ages, there seemingly has been no way to get around the knotty issues that have confronted the Holy Land. Many have tried to work around the edges, but nobody has sliced through the big issues to create a road to lasting peace.
