The Bible records some examples of people committing suicide. While we find no commentary with these incidences, it’s covered in principle in the Sixth Commandment. Suicide is an act of murder. (We recommend that you read the section on this commandment in our booklet The Ten Commandments.)

While there can be no doubt that taking one’s life is wrong, suicide is often a complex matter. Perhaps others are quick to judge and condemn people who take their own lives. But we should avoid the tendency to oversimplify this tragic type of death. Individuals who commit suicide often have been struggling with serious problems, such as depression, alcoholism or other forms of drug abuse. Taking one’s life isn’t the right way to deal with any trial, but the people who do are likely not thinking clearly.

Is there hope for them to live again? God says He will resurrect all the dead (John 5:28-29), and we know that God wants everyone to have a full chance to repent and be forgiven and to be saved (2 Peter 3:9; 1 Timothy 2:4). The Bible shows that those who did not understand God’s spiritual truth during their lifetimes will have another chance at life, a chance to deal with their problems better. By resurrecting them, God isn’t giving them a second chance at salvation, but rather their only chance. See our Frequently Asked Question, “Will Everyone Have a Chance for Salvation?” for more information about this needful and little understood truth—the second resurrection.

We know that the families and friends of people who “succeed” in committing suicide often suffer terribly, as they struggle to understand why their loved one died in this way. The survivors need a great deal of understanding and comfort.

If we can be of further help, please let us know.

Emma, same. I couldn't stop crying ever since I knew Jonghyun died, especially when I learned that he suffered seasonal depression for over 5 years before he decided to end his life. His psychiatrist treated him badly according to his suicide note. My mom saw me crying and said that Jonghyun is in hell which made me feel worse. I am from a Christian family but I cannot accept that Jonghyun went to hell for being sick and burdened. I have a perspective of God that he can't be measured by time, space, and human ideas, but I'm still worried if Jonghyun really is in hell. His last post is a proof that he prays to God since he said that, "I pray that you're not hurting." He also wanted to live and tried hard to survive, but his illness didn't let him. He was obviously not in his right mind anymore. What does God say about mentally ill people or people who do not have control over his actions? I'm really worried because Jonghyun is such a great artist and he fought for depressed people and other matters. I know that he did not want to die, but depression made him do it to himself. I hope anyone could answer because I've been in great pain and dissonance since he died. I really loved him.

Your only idol should be god

  • Tonyc

Put no other idol before me!
Its hard for people to understand this, as they hide God from us.

    Oh, Emma!

How precious you will always be to God (Malachi 3:17)!! https://www.ucg.org/united-news/god-is-making-his-jewels-and-you-are-one-of-them

And someday, God Himself "will wipe away every tear from [both your and Junghyun's] eyes and eliminate death entirely. No one will mourn or weep any longer. The pain of wounds will no longer exist" (Revelation 21:4, The Passion Translation 2017): https://www.ucg.org/bible-study-tools/bible-questions-and-answers/is-there-hope-for-suicide-victims

    Hello Emma,
I (and many others) would like to make you feel better. But sometimes that better feeling only comes with time and change. I want to quote someting that we have written:
"Is there hope for them to live again? (people who have killed themselves) God says He will resurrect all the dead (John 5:28-29), and we know that God wants everyone to have a full chance to repent and be forgiven and to be saved (2 Peter 3:9; 1 Timothy 2:4). The Bible shows that those who did not understand God’s spiritual truth during their lifetimes will have another chance at life, a chance to deal with their problems better. By resurrecting them, God isn’t giving them a second chance at salvation, but rather their only chance. See our Frequently Asked Question, “Will everyone have a chance for salvation? ” for more information about this needful and little understood truth—the second resurrection."
But to your feeling! Do not think that you will always feel as you do at this moment.
Believe me, we humans have much, much more to learn and experience and enjoy!
Find your best friend and share with them your sorrow but do not despair! Keep talking and living. You have so much love to share !!

Hi I'm Giselle,13 yrs. I live in San Antonio ,Texas and go to an awesome church, but there's been a lot of struggles with suicide since I was about 8/9 yrs old. A lot happened in my life and alot is still happening in my life, but it's gotten better. I'm so scared that one day I might actually take my own life but I'm scared to live in this life. Usually we see people stuggling with suicide because of school but not in this case. I get called horrible things everyday by my family because I have an attitude towards them. I'm so sick of it that it actually turns me into a bad person saying bad stuff back, hitting, taking knifes out,all the above. I Know I'm depressed,I know something is wrong with me but these words: "you should've been an abortion", "you are going to be just like your mom,a pornstar" ,"I know you've been telling my church your problems, don't put your problems on my church people and don't commit suicide in my home" ,"your just going to be nothing", "I don't have to worry about you getting into boys cause no one is going to like you", "your ruining my relationship with my daughter, go back with your mom but I know she doesn't want you", wants me to end it all.

  • Steven Britt

    Hi Michael,
Thank you for writing to us - please get help immediately if you feel like committing suicide. You can call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline 24 hours a day at 1-800-273-8255. Everyone feels out of control sometimes, but we always have a choice because God is always there - loving us and reaching out to us, hoping that we will turn to Him and live. It sounds like your struggle has two parts - one of them is the out-of-control anger, which is a physical component that you have to learn how to deal with and process without hurting yourself. This article can help you understand how to do better: https://www.ucg.org/bible-study-tools/bible-questions-and-answers/how-can-i-manage-my-anger-what-can-i-do-to-overcome-a

The second part is understanding the purpose for your life. When I say that God has a purpose for you, I don't want to leave that as an empty or meaningless statement - you can read more about God's purpose for your life here: https://www.ucg.org/ferramentas-de-estudo-da-biblia/guias-de-estudo/qual-e-o-seu-destino/the-question-of-the-ages

I, and I'm sure many others who read this, will be praying for you.

Committing suicide is the only way out of this life, because the truth is money and gain is the only thing this life offers, and love that we we're told exist doesn't exist. Being liked is more important than telling the truth and if there is a heaven then why be here. So
I'm trying to find a way to kill myself without causing too much pain. Any recommendations? Its better to end your life before you hurt others

    not true

  • Lena VanAusdle

    John,
first, get help. please, please get help! If you are in the US you can call the national suicide hotline (1-800-273-8255).

Even if you don't believe it, God loves you. And while taking your own life isn't (necessarily) the unpardonable sin; no one goes to heaven. You will await the resurrection to physical life, at which time God will give you the opportunity to know Him and accept Him and His ways, and repent of your sins. I'm not sure what you mean about "hurting others," but I am saying a prayer that you find help for whatever it is that you are going through

After the death is the judgement. there is no other chance.
Hebrews 9: 27 Just as man is appointed to die once, and after that to face judgment, 2 Corinthians 5:10
For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive his due for the things done in the body, whether good or bad.
Killing yourself is a sin and you can't ask for forgiveness.

  • Skip Miller

    Hello Albert,
I agree,"After death is the judgement." Hebrews 9: 27 A very scary verse, Yes?
But please look at 1 Pet 4; 17. Evidently some are being judged right now!
As I perhaps said before, not everyone understands enough yet to have eternal life snuffed out! The verse in 1 Peter shows that some are being judged right now but others will be judged later. Can we know when that later is? Yes we can but the point is: Everyone is NOT judged at the exact same time! We also need to ask ourselves, "When is the judgment rendered on those of "those of the house of God." I think that judgment is being rendered day by day , or at least over time. Therefore we can safely consider that those who do not know enough to be judged now will be given enough time in the future to be judged.
Yes, everyone will be judged but not until they have been given true understanding of the rules and the rewards. God is overwhelmingly fair and just!

    Hello Mayela,
Sometimes there is nothing that can be said unless a person has gone through
what Mary1970 went through. Perhaps you can help her.
    But perhaps not.
The message I took away from the short piece "What happens when a person commits suicide?" and the posts afterwards was that the world (in general) really has no knowledge of why they exist or where they are going!
Tragic but (perhaps) fortunately true! What? how can ignorance be good?

I will try to explain. As stated above, "Most...have no knowledge..." and therefore are not being judged now (by God.) They will be & are judged NOW by other people. But most people do not understand the rules themselves.
This is not going to make you or Mary1970 feel any better right now but if you think that perhaps there might be an answer to the great gnawing pain in your life, I would talk to you more. I can be contacted.
The author of the piece has stated the solution if you can believe.

I FEEL PEOPLE WHO HAVE COMMITTED SUICIDE HAVE LOST ALL HOPE IN THIS LIFE WE HAVE A LOVING GOD WHO LOVES ALL OF US AND I FEEL HE WILL RESURRECT EACH ONE OF THEM TO SHOW THEM THERE IS HOPE AND TAKE ALL THEIR PAIN AWAY SEVERAL PEOPLE IN MY FAMILY HAVE COMMITTED SUICIDE ( MY FATHER--NEPHEWS-AND MY OWN SON THE MOST RECENT--AS A MOTHER THAT LOVED HER SON DEEPLY AS GOD LOVED HIS SON --I DO NOT WISH TO EVER GIVE UP ON THE HOPE THAT HE WILL HAVE A CHANCE TO BE HAPPY IN GOD'S KINGDOM WHERE NOTHING CAN HURT HIM ANYMORE OR MAKE HIM FEEL LIKE HIS LIFE DOES NOT MATTER--GOD LOVES EVERY ONE OF US AND WE ALL SIN IN WAYS WE MAY NOT EVEN KNOW OR RECOGNIZE BECAUSE ONLY ONE ON THIS EARTH WAS EVER PERFECT AND THAT WAS JESUS CHRIST OUR LORD --EVEN PEOPLE THAT THINK THEY ARE PERFECT ARE NOT --YOU CAN NOT LIVE IN A WORLD FILLED WITH SIN AND NEVER HAVE IT IN YOUR LIFE EVEN THO YOU TRY TO AVOID IT UNTIL WE ARE MADE LIKE HIM WE ARE ALL GUILTY

  • Johnk1986

    Bonnie,
Did your father, nephew or son hurt anyone while they we're alive? We're they violent people or we're they good hearted and just didnt understand how it all worked?

  • Skip Miller

    Thanks John.
I hope that BONNIE reads what you wrote.
Would you like to discuss more about the subject?
If so, we can talk a some more.

  • Skip Miller

    Hello Bonnie,
You have certainly experienced more tragedy than I have, or that I ever want to.
Rather than try to explain what i feel has been adequately stated in the article
I would rather go to one scripture location and have us read it.
I'm going to ask you to read something out of order. Rev 20: 6 "Blessed and holy is he who has part in the first resurrection. ..." Now let's read Rev 20: 5 "But the rest of the dead did not live again until the thousand years were finished. ..."
This means that there are some, which as you indicated, actually did not know or understand enough to be Judged in this life. (1 Peter 4: 17) They will live again, be taught
and be Judged as some of us are being Judged now. (I capitalized Judged because the only One whose Judgement really counts is our Lord, Savior , & soon coming King, Jesus Christ. Never give up on your hope and if possible, hang out with people who know and believe what Rev 20 clearly indicates.

  • Sabrina Peabody

My heart goes out to you and your family Bonnie. Thank you for sharing your story. God knows what each person has struggled with and we know He is a good, kind, just and merciful God. God greatly values life which is why we should do all we can to encourage people today--that there is a purpose and meaning to life. Ultimately, we can thank God we can hope in Him.
